LONDON (AFP) - European stock markets fell sharply in late trading Thursday on rising fears of a recession in the United States and Europe.
Nearing the close of play, London's FTSE 100 index of leading shares was down 4.46 percent at 3,897.83 points, Frankfurt's DAX 30 had shed 5.65 percent to reach 4,587.07 points and the Paris CAC 40 had dived 5.30 percent to 3,201.88.
The European declines were in line with Wall Street, where the Dow Jones Industrial Average opened with a gain but later fell 2.44 percent to 8,368.44 on news that US industrial output was down 2.8 percent in September, its steepest slide since 1974.
